MELBOURNE: The Sydney Thunders Twenty20 side has reportedly signed the two biggest available names, Chris Gayle and David Warner for the Big Bash.
Under the rules of the new Big Bash competition, the franchises are technically not supposed to be in negotiations with players but all franchises are ignoring the rules.
It's understood Gayle has demanded in excess of $250,000 and Warner $140,000 to play with the side, which is based at ANZ stadium in Sydney's west.
With the eight Big Bash teams limited to a salary cap of just over one million dollar, this means two players have soaked up over a third of the team's budget.
Gayle is understood to have rejected an offer from the Perth Scorchers. He had played for WA last season, The Australian reports.
Sydney Thunders' general manager John Dyson denied he had signed anybody.
"No one has got anyone until there is a signature on the line. Contracting is not even supposed to start until next week, but I make no secret of the fact we, like every team, would love to have Gayle and Warner opening the batting for us," he said.
Cricket Australia is yet to release the official contract documents to the teams, but that has not stopped them making unofficial deals on the side.
With India banning their players from competing in the tournament, and few players from other nations available at that time, there has been a lot of concentration on West Indies and Pakistan players, particularly Gayle, The Australian reports.
